DVR Light: Cable Comes to Rescue of Channel Surfers
Cable Comes to Rescue of Channel Surfers
(full story)
Time Warner Cable is developing a sort of light alternative to the Digital Video Recorder that would only allow a user to start the current live program from the beginning. It would not record shows for later viewing, and it would be subject to licensing restrictions. In other words, not all shows will be available for starting over.
Given the stiff competition in the DVR market one has to wonder if this is too little, too late. If DVR manufacturers keep up their aggressive pursuit of customers, this technology might be rendered obsolete before it gets a real chance to take off.
The new service, tentatively called Startover, will allow viewers to run back to the beginning of any program that's currently on the air. Say a viewer happens upon a crime drama halfway through the hour, Startover provides the chance to see the show from the start. Running late? Start the show from its opening, as long as it's still being aired.Get the full story here. --------
