NEW YORK, March 15 (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. on Tuesday won a contract to supply its digital video recording system to No. 1 cable television operator Comcast Corp., in a deal that could dramatically boost TiVo's distribution.

Microsoft has WMV 10 Player and is seeking to make this the industry standard for digital music. Seems like déjà vu circa 1980 again. Who will win the pocketbooks of the 21st-century consumer? Apple Computer (NasdaqNM:AAPL) Shares of digital video recorder technology pioneer TiVo were up for a second straight session Thursday amid speculation that Apple Computer may be mulling a takeover of the company, but pulled back from their intraday high. The Cupertino, Calif., company dropped the price on the iPod mini, which comes with four gigabytes of storage capable of holding 1,500 songs, to $199 from $249. Last month, Apple introduced an even less expensive gadget, the $99 iPod shuffle, but that model holds fewer songs and doesn't have a screen, as the iPod mini does. We are attractive on Apple.

Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC). Intel Corp. said it agreed to buy Oplus Technologies Inc., a closely held company in Israel, as part of the chip giant's push into the digital-TV market. Terms weren't disclosed. But a person familiar with the situation put the transaction around $100 million. Oplus, a 100-employee firm founded in 1993, competes with companies such as Pixelworks Inc. and Genesis Microchip Inc. in making chips that process video signals in televisions and related products. While continuing to sell products under its current brand, Oplus will help Intel develop chips for products like digital set-top-boxes, digital-media recorders and digital televisions, Intel said. We are attractive on Intel.

Market Commentary: "The market had this big sell-off on Tuesday and it gained a little bit of ground -- about 40 percent of it -- back on Wednesday, and today it looks like they're trying to claw a little bit more back from Tuesday's weakness," said Tim Heekin, head of stock trading at Thomas Weisel Partners.

After hovering around the flat line for most of the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at its best levels, up 75 points, or 0.7 percent, at 10,748.79.

Since Tuesday, when the blue-chip gauge tumbled 174 points to suffer its largest one-day slice since May 2003, the Dow has now recovered 137 points of that decline.

The Nasdaq Composite Index , meanwhile, rose 20.45 points, or 1 percent, at 2,051.70 and the S&P 500 added 9.40 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,200.20.

There could be another little push to the upside, "but I don't think spectacularly so. I think, again, you make highs that are going to be marginal highs -- it's going to be being in the right groups of the right stocks," he added.

YouBet.com Q4 Results

Leading online wagering company YouBet.com (NASDAQ:UBET) recently reported Q4 and 2004 financial results. For the quarter, total wagers grew 9.7% to $76.7 million. Total revenue, which is commissions plus other revenue, was $16.2 million, a 14% increase. Net revenue, or total revenues minus track and licensing fees, was $5.3 million, an increase of 4.2%. The company posted net income of $535,000 or $0.02 per share versus a net loss of $1.2 million or $0.04 per share in the year ago quarter. On a 'same track basis' the company saw a 35% increase in Q4 revenues, and a 25% increase in handle.

For 2005, YouBet plans to focus on two objectives. First, the company plans to grow handle and revenues organically and through consolidation of other providers and competitors. As one of the only publicly traded pure plays in this space, Ian Wyatt and his team believe YouBet is well positioned to use stock and cash in acquisition activities. Secondly, the company plans to diversify its sources of revenues through initiatives such as the recent acquisition of International Racing Group that will open up international opportunities for YouBet.

Kintera Q4 Results

Kintera (Nasdaq:KNTA), a leading provider of software as a service solutions for nonprofits, recently announced financial results for Q4 and 2004. Revenue for the quarter was $7.8 million, a 176% increase from $2.8 million in the year ago quarter. For the full year, revenue almost tripled to $23.7 million from $8 million in 2003. Despite the major revenue growth, Kintera continues to post substantial losses. For the quarter, the company posted a loss of $5.9 million or $0.21 per share, better than the loss of $0.23 - $0.25 management guided to. For 2004, the company processed $149.2 million in transactions, versus $14.3 million in 2003.

Wyatt and his team's outlook for Kintera continues to be positive. The company appears to be on track, and continues to experience massive top line growth as online giving comes mainstream. While Kintera is one of their earlier stage plays in the Growth Report portfolio, Wyatt and his team remain convinced that the company continues to experience solid growth organically and through its aggressive string of acquisitions.

Tivo Achieves 3 million Subscriber Milestone

Tivo (Nasdaq:TIVO) this week announced that as of January 31, the end of the company's fiscal Q4, the company had achieved its goal of 3 million total paying subscribers. During the quarter the company added a net 698,000 subscribers, of which 251,000 are Tivo-owned, and 447,000 are through the DIRECTV channel.

Can TiVo make it on its own? More on the buyout hype from Mercury News.

Analysts say the timing would be right for TiVo to seek a company to rescue it from its growing list of woes. The company may have invented a whole new way for consumers to record and watch television shows. Yet it continues to lose money and has suffered management turmoil recently. And it has yet to strike a deal that would bring its groundbreaking technology to cable subscribers.

Phillip Swan agrees that TiVo could use a buyout - just not Apple.

By late Thursday, however, the rumors appeared to be fading, which is good news for TiVo fans. Apple is one of the last companies that TiVo should consider as a prospective owner.

Switching to DVR service is easy for Time Warner or Cablevision subscribers. Just switch out your cable box for a DVR and start paying a modest monthly fee.

You can make the switch at a service center for free, or have the cable company come and install it for a charge - $30.50 at Time Warner, $34.95 at Cablevision.

After that, Time Warner subscribers pay a monthly fee of $8.95 to be able to record and store up to 35 hours of TV, with no tapes involved. (Cablevision's DVR service, at $9.95 a month, offers 110 hours of storage capacity.)

New data shows just how important it will be for advertisers to reach DVR users.

NIELSEN MAY HAVE given the TV industry a reprieve on how digital video recorders are actually impacting TV viewing, but new research indicates DVR households are some of the most dynamic consumers are an especially important segment of the media population and their behavior likely is affecting all media, not just television.

TiVo shares were up 18% on wednesday on rumors that Apple might be interested in buying the DVR maker.

Shares of TiVo, a pioneer in digital video recording technology, jumped 68 cents, or 18.38 percent, to $4.38 in Wednesday's regular trading.
